The garden was given to the Trustees of the Friends by Mrs Elizabeth Daniels, widow of Dr Daniels, partner in the Emsworth Practice, in 1955, to be held in trust and maintained as a garden.
It is used it for community social events, such as the Friends’ summer fete and seasonal events in conjunction with the Southbourne Lions. We also offer the garden to local organisations for their own special events, and, over the last few years, U3A, local singing groups, the Brownies, the Baptist church and Right at Home have all held BBQ’s and other events. We make no specific charge for it being used for these purposes, but look for a donation to support our running costs.
We have embarked on a programme to upgrade and enhance the garden, and have been helped by our own members offering their time and effort in the basic garden needs of weeding and digging. The south west corner of the garden has been cleared and made ready to erect a pergola during March and April. The wood for the pergola has been cut and is seasoning currently over the winter period. We have laid a patio in the north west corner which will aid summer BBQ’s, and intend to create raised rose beds on the north wall.
We hope to have made sufficient progress by May to open up the garden one Saturday in each month to coincide with the Emsworth Farmers Market. We intend to do this in conjunction with the Lions, with both the Friends and the Lions providing stalls and refreshments .
